Hospitalist

JOB SUMMARY:

The Nocturnist will provide supervision, consultation, and teaching to residents in the department of medicine and family practice.  The incumbent will also provide medical consultation as necessary for surgery and Ob/Gyn residents provide emergency inpatient coverage of medical patients on the non-teaching medical and family practice service.

The Nocturnist will support medical staff utilization management and clinical effectiveness efforts, enhance the quality and safety of in-patient care, complete care of patients admitted to the Hospitalist service (either referred by private MD or admitted from clinic/ED).  

Practice limited exclusively to the inpatient primary care service (general floors and critical care areas). 

MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES/CRITICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Is delegated the authority by the MEC and Board of Directors to carry out the following duties:

• acts as the attending of record for patients admitted from the clinic.
• assumes role as the attending of record when requested by community private MD
• provides consultation service to medical / FP residents on call as requested
• responds to emergency calls for any inpatient
• helps to resolve interdepartmental conflicts involving house staff and/or attendings
• promotes compliance with clinical practice guidelines adopted by the medical staff
• assists in resident and medical student teaching
• provides consultation/teaching to house staff on other services as requested
• provides coverage for residents during mandatory training conferences
• provides emergency coverage for patients on the acute rehabilitation unit
• evaluates complex problems and emergencies in unstable patients on the non-teaching service at the request of nursing staff or attending
• requests and provides consultation in the absence or at the request of the attending physician
• requests private attending presence on site when judged appropriate
• provides a teaching resource to nursing and ancillary staff
• is available to perform / assist with procedures on teaching and non-teaching patients
• plays a role on peer-review, performance improvement, patient safety and clinical effectiveness committees

   

  QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

   

  • MD License required.
  • Board eligible or board certified required; Internal Medicine highly preferred.
  • Prior Family Practice sufficient in-patient experience to effectively carry out essential responsibilities required.  Must possess excellent communication, critical care and computer skills. 

    ADDITIONAL PROVISIONS:

    Attendings who specifically request hospitalist services (admit history/px, consultation, invasive procedures, etc) must allow the house physician to bill for those services.  Hospitalists will bill for all services provided whenever possible.  Priority for time allotment will be based on patient acuity, patient safety, and the needs of the residency program.

    PATIENT POPULATION SERVED:

    Hospitalized and Emergency Department patients on the adult medicine and family practice service

    Medical consultations on hospitalized and Emergency Department patients who may be primarily assigned to other clinical services

    MANUAL SKILLS:

    Usual skills customarily needed for performance of activities as an internal medicine physician practicing in the confines of an acute care hospital.

    PHYSICAL EFFORT:

    Usual physical effort customarily needed for performance of activities as an internal medicine physician practicing in the confines of an acute care hospital.
